Interview
Senna Misawa is revealing new facets of Edo Kiriko
The cut-glass artisan shares her take on the aesthetics and culture of the centuries-old craft.
Uniquely rooted in Tokyo, Edo Kiriko is the fine art of cut glass from Edo (the former name of present-day Tokyo). Artisans use abrasive wheels to grind and polish glassware, creating delicate patterns and elegant designs. Of the 100 or so craftspeople producing Edo Kiriko today, many are younger people new to the craft. While they inherit a robust tradition, they are also eager to redefine it. At Horiguchi Kiriko, third-generation master Toru Horiguchi is creating a path for the next generation of artisans – Senna Misawa and Yuki Sakamoto – to flourish and push the boundaries of their craft.
